Explored through material investigation and culminating in the design of a pavilion embodying the qualities inherent in the materials; temporality, tensility, and translucency.

My interest in bioplastics came from a desire to work with materials that have a lifecycle that match that of the design study. Through the body of work I have explored environmentally conscious materials that are plant-based, compostable and utilize food waste. Here the potentials of bioplastic are realized as a new way of thinking about the longevity of materiality in architecture. As I look ahead to the next phase of this body of work I’m excited to further explore this concept of ephemeral architecture.

The centerpiece of the exhibition was a 1:1 prototype of my pavilion design utilizing two panels of spirulina bioplastic and two panels of beetroot bioplastic framed with salvaged 2x4’s. Taking full advantage of the space and facilities I was able to construct the frame in a few days to display the bioplastic as intended and explore the architectural detailing and fastening methods.

For two weeks this June I was chosen to be one of ten Architects in Residence at Art Omi in upstate NY. The residency involved living and working on the grounds of Art Omi and being immersed in our individual projects whilst sharing meals and ideas with an amazing cohort. My project was a continuation of my research into the potentials of bioplastics in architecture.

RK House is a single family terrace house located in Sydney’s Inner West. The project reconfigured the existing programs of the terrace house in order to meet the growing needs of the young family.

RK House. Fostering a connection between the interior and exterior expanded the spatial perception of each space within the constricted Inner-West lot.

RK House. The challenge of infusing the social spaces with natural light, arising from the combination of a deep floor plate and a compact site nestled closely among neighboring structures, was addressed through the implementation of skylights and glazed doors.

The Brew Lamp The Brew Lamp was born from a mater

The Brew Lamp

The Brew Lamp was born from a material exploration into the viability and potentials of bioplastics that utilize food waste. The shade of the lamp is crafted from recycled coffee beans and a plant-based bioplastic. The switch and other components are made from a biodegradable coffee filament. The result is a unique lamp that emits a warm, inviting glow. By using waste materials, the Brew Lamp is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also environmentally friendly.

A Home For Nomads proposes a microhouse typology that combines a sculptural form, sustainable materials, flexible furniture solutions and robotic fabrication to create an affordable, environmentally conscious and impactful home for individuals and couples.

The Covid-19 pandemic necessitated a shift to work from home and an increased reliance on our digital modes of communication. Now living in separate physical and digital realities it is evident that our work lives do not have to be connected to our physical presence. Thus
a generation of digital nomads are born, able to live decentralized from the economic burden of increasingly unaffordable cities.

It is within this context that a Home for Nomads proposes a new way of living. The sculptural form is constructed from extruded clay and hay, providing a dense insulating shell. Its tall ceilings and operable windows provide cross ventilation and the stack effect in order to
regulate temperature.

The home’s minimal footprint is optimized with flexible furniture, transforming the central space into a range of configurations, supporting a diversity of lifestyles and activities.

Interlace’s simple rectilinear structure frames swaths of mesh fabric, stretched and contorted around each other to subdivide the space. Within the seeming chaos, the fabric is strategically placed to wall off both a winding “pathway”, allowing passage through the structure, and several adjacent “rooms”, where people can sit and talk with the comfort of being physically distanced while in visual proximity to others.
